Dr. Therese Milanovic

Dr. Therese Milanovic

Based in Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Dr. Therese Milanovic is in demand as both performer and pedagogue. She was the first Australian to become a certified Taubman Instructor and is now an associate faculty member with the Golandsky Institute, having achieved Master level certification. She has presented numerous workshops on the Taubman Approach in Australia at venues including Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU), the Music Teachers’ Association of Queensland (MTAQ), and Australian Society for Performing Arts Health (ASPAH). She was an invited speaker at the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference in 2011. Teaching the Taubman Approach is the focus of her work at QCGU and in her Brisbane studio, where she regularly attracts interstate students, as well as regional and international students via Skype.

Since completing her Master’s and PhD at QCGU, Therese has performed with Brisbane-based Topology since 2009, including recordings for ABC radio, collaborations with the Brodsky String Quartet, drummer Grant Collins, performances at Brisbane Festival, Queensland Music Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, Salihara Arts Festival (Indonesia), Australian tours, and touring the Netherlands and Belgium with the Kransky Sisters. Previously, Therese was a founding member of Collusion, with whom she toured nationally with Musica Viva Country Wide, Musica Viva in Schools, and released a debut CD with Move Records. In addition to performing new music, Therese loves performing chamber music with fellow kindred spirits, bringing both traditional and lesser-known repertoire to the stage.

Earlier in 2014, Therese was thrilled to organize both John Bloomfield and Sophie Till’s first visits to Australia, including coordinating the private lesson schedule and weekend workshops for the MTAQ, which attracted participants from across the country. See www.theresemilanovic.com for information on her forthcoming performances and Golandsky Institute events in Australia.

Thanks to Skype, Therese is able to study regularly with her teachers Edna Golandsky and John Bloomfield, in combination with travelling to the US when possible.

Connected At A Distance

6:15 am. The alarm goes off, and I quickly scramble out of bed to get ready for my Skype lesson with John Bloomfield at 7am, 5pm NYC time. This morning I’m showing one of my adult students for feedback, followed by my own lesson on Prokofiev’s first violin sonata. Sophie Till and I are scheming some performances together in 2015, and I want to get started on this program early.

“Classical and jazz pianists play the same instrument and are governed by the same physiological principles. The physical freedom offered by the Taubman approach is the perfect companion to the creative freedom pursued by improvising jazz pianists.”
